Peer to peer sharing, known as P2P, has been increasing in popularity since the days of Napster and big-band lawsuits like Metallica, and thus have given birth to Mac-specific P2P platforms like aMule.

Overview of aMule

Everyone out there with a computer is guilty of downloading songs and videos and not always going through those proper pay channels to do so. It's why peer to peer sharing, also known as P2P, is such a hit. It allows a user to upload a file to the internet, and someone else can download it. There are many programs out there you can use, but aMule is actually a Mac-specific network that taps you into files that are specifically formatted to play well on your Apple machine. It stands out with users as a clean, sleek, easy to use platform that makes searching simple.

The aMule program was created and released by the company of the same name. It's a very small sized download and doesn't sap up a lot of processing power at all. It's free to use and doesn't bog you down with a bunch of annoying ads. You can use it on Mac, Mac OS X, and anything later, and it will run just fine.

How aMule Works

One of the first things you will probably notice about aMule upon loading it up is just how sleek and clean it looks. You aren't going to be bogged down here by a bunch of pointless search features. You have your search bar, categories from which you can choose, and a large search bar up top where you can type in the name of what you're after.

You can also connect to different networks, like a localized search, a global search, or even specific networks. If you know what you're doing with info hashes, you can even use this program to search for and download torrents. Just be aware here that none of these networks are as large as some of the competition out there, so you might not find everything you're looking for.

aMule Features

One of the coolest features of aMule is the ability to choose your different networks from the Networks tab. This allows you to search locally or beyond. This can help you eliminate a lot of results that may be spam or mislabeled files that you really don't want. You can also choose to sort by availability, so the files you're trying to download will always have someone seeding them on the other end.

It's a little lighter on features compared to some competition on the market, but it's a big positive here to be able to control your search network and to keep things in-house if you need to. You can also change a few preferences and easily check on your transfers to view the progress of whatever it is you're downloading.
